WSoc: HORNETS SCORE LATE, DEFEAT MOUNT ST. MARY?S 1-0

Dover, Del. (Sep. 26, 2016) --- Freshman Samantha Wanzer scored from close range in the 80th minute and goal keeper Michele Lammers recorded her eighth career shutout to lift Delaware State to a 1-0 victory over Mount St. Mary's at Alumni Stadium this evening.

The goal was set up by a corner kick from Savannah Taylor (so.), who lofted a near perfect cross that Wanzer leaped to knock down with her head before booting a shot past Mount St. Mary's goal keeper Sydni Surowiec with just under 11 minutes left to play (79:02).

The goal was the first of Wanzer's career, while Taylor recorded her third career assist.

“I just mentioned to assistant coach (Taylor) Mims that we need Sam Wanzer to outleap everyone to give us a chance on the corner kick,” said Delaware State first-year head coach Kourtney Rhoades. “We couldn't have asked for better execution on the play.”

Rhoades credited the entire squad for the defensive effort.

“I thought our energy level was great, particularly on defense,” she said. “Each line did its job, and Lammers came through when we needed her to make a play.”

Lammers had four saves in the contest to give her 61 for the season and lowered her goals against average to 3.12.

The Hornets had five shots in the game, four on goal.

Each of DSU's wins this season has come by shutout.

The Hornets snapped a three-slide to improve to 3-7, while The Mount fell to 3-5-1 this season.

Delaware State is idle until Oct. 6 when LIU-Brooklyn visits Alumni Stadium for a 7 p.m. contest.
