(Richmond, Va.) – The Delaware State track & field program opened the outdoor portion of its 2015-16 campaign over the weekend on a high note in the VCU Ram Invite, highlighted by Charles Wulff-Cochrane and Elijah Agwu bringing home a pair of crowns.
In the case of Wulff-Cochrane, he clocked a 53.91 ahead of two VCU runners to win the 400-Meter Hurdles with a time of 53.91, whereas Agwu finished on top in the Discus event with a mark of 46.96 meters.
”It wasn't my best performance, but minus the bad weather, I was able to qualify for conference,” said Wulff-Cochrane. “Now, I know what I need to work on and I will continue to improve from here.”
The men's side for the Hornets also included Emanuel Hitch registering a second place finish in the 400-Meter Dash with a time of 50.09, while Roderick Brown finished third (6.70m) in the Long Jump.
The Hornet women, meanwhile, were led by Roselyn Oroyemi finishing third in the 100-Meter Dash with a time of 12.34. The event also featured Raquel Hughes placing sixth (12.40) and Trameceia Sample crossing the finish line in eighth (12.57).
Rayanna Relerford (24.87) and Faleesha Dowe (25.15) finished fifth and seventh in the 200-Meter Dash, whereas Omealla Gordon (54.48) and Leandra Nyemeck (1:00.01) placed fourth and 10th in the 400-Meter Dash, respectively.
“I am ecstatic about my 200-Meter Dash performance qualifying me for MEAC's, especially since I had complications with my hamstring when it came to sprints,” said Relerford. “I know this will help me moving forward in the 400 Meters.”
Other notable performances for the women included Deja Johnson in the 400-Meter Hurdles (fourth - 1:07.45), along with Dowe (fourth – 5.03m) and Fanta Ba (sixth – 4.94m) in the Long Jump.
“The team competed to the best of their ability, despite the weather not being up to par,” said first-year head coach Damien Drummond. “We still have a lot of work to do on the track as well as on the field. Having seniors Rayanna Relerford and Charles Wulff-Cochrane, who have qualified for MEAC in their respected events, will help motivate the younger athletes to work harder.”
Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will return to action with the Wesley Invitational in Dover, Del. this Thursday.
