Dover, Del. (Oct. 6, 2016) --- The Delaware State women's soccer team surrendered three second period goals in a 3-1 loss to LIU Brooklyn at Alumni Stadium this evening.
The Blackbirds won for the first time this season (1-10), while Hornets fell to 3-8.
Delaware State scored first when Ayanna Smith scored her first goal of the season, and second in her career, from close range off a free kick from Elise Pratt in the 21st minute.
The Hornets had several chances to pad the lead in the first period, but LIU goal keeper Erin Harbison turned away three DSU shots, including a diving save in the 41st minute.
Delaware State starting keeper Michele Lammers also had three first period saves to preserve the Hornets' 1-0 lead at the break.
LIU evened the score at 1-1 when Jenn fired a shot past DSU goal keeper Leslie Fazio off a feed from Madison Gomez in the 57th minute.
The Blackbirds took the lead when Ashley Drozd scored off a pass from Gomez in the 69th minute.
Peters added an insurance goal for LIU off the third assist of the match by Gomez in the 75th minute.
Delaware State returns to action on Oct. 11 at Pennsylvania. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in Philadelphia.
The Hornets will wrap up their 2016 season with home contests against NJIT on Oct. 16 (7 p.m.) and South Carolina State on Oct. 21 ( 7 p.m.).
