(Dover, Del.) – Saturday afternoon, the Delaware State women's basketball team (5-22, 2-12 MEAC) dropped its sixth in a row with a 68-61 loss to the visiting UMES Hawks (11-15, 8-7 MEAC), despite a career-high 27 points (13-of-18) from forward Amber Bogard.
With this loss, the Lady Hornets dropped to 0-2 against the Hawks this season, whereas UMES snapped its brief two-game skid.
Trailing 28-26 at the break, Delaware State took a 42-38 lead with a little under 11 minutes to play after back-to-back Bogard layups. However, the Hawks responded with a 17-3 run to take their largest lead of the afternoon, headlined by guard Mariah McCoy draining three out of her game-high four 3-pointers.
Nevertheless, trailing by eight with 3:24 left, the Lady Hornets responded by scoring nine out of the next 11 points to make it a 62-61 ball game at the 1:45 mark, spearheaded by Bogard connecting for three layups. Unfortunately, Delaware State failed to register another basket, while UMES did just enough at the charity stripe by hitting four out of six attempts down the stretch to secure the regular season sweep.
At game's end, three Hawks scored in double figures, led by guard Jessica Long's 18 points (5-of-15), whereas McCoy finished with 16 (6-of-10) off the bench. For DSU, guard Mikah Aldridge finished with 15 points (6-of-12) as the only other player to reach double figures in the scoring column, whereas leading scorer (16.7 ppg) and top rebounder (8.0 rpg) Tierra Hawkins battled foul trouble throughout Saturday's contest to finish with just eight points (3-of-5) and five boards before fouling out.
Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will take on Hampton this Monday evening (5:30 p.m.), in what will be their final home game of the season.
