(Philadelphia, Pa.) – Two double digit unanswered first half runs by the Temple Owls (6-4), in addition to six players scoring in double figures at game's end, turned out to be too much for the Delaware State women's basketball team (2-8) to overcome Saturday afternoon on the road, as the Lady Hornets suffered a 100-59 loss.
With this defeat, the Lady Hornets failed register back-to-back wins for the first time this season, while Temple tallied its highest scoring total of the season (100) on its way to its third consecutive victory.
In the first quarter, the Hornets led by two twice, thanks to forward Amber Bogard finishing with a layup at the 8:22 mark, followed by guard N'Kayah Kersey draining one of two treys of the afternoon on the following possession.
Leading 14-13 with 4:54 left in the opening quarter, the Owls ripped off 13 unanswered points, ending with guard Alliya Butts hitting a free throw to complete an old fashion 3-point play. TU's second first half outburst resulted in a 10-0 run to make it a 47-19 contest with just over two minutes to play in the second quarter.
At the break, Delaware State allowed the most points in an opening half this season (53), whereas Temple featured four players scoring in double figures. TU also scored 22 points off 14 DSU turnovers, in addition to going 16-of-19 (.842) from the charity stripe.
The second half, meanwhile, featured much of the same, despite Delaware State outscoring the Owls in the third quarter (25-23). Shooting 53 percent (18-of-34) in the second stanza, guard Tanaya Atkinson finished with a game-high 24 points (11-of-16) and nine boards for TU, whereas Butts tallied 17 points (4-of-11) and a game-high seven assists.
