(Dover, Del.) – In the latest edition of the #HornetSpotlight – exclusively broadcasted on DSUHornets.com – sisters Aisha and Aleya Peete of the DSU women's golf team answered a handful of questions, ranging from how life was growing up as daughters of the late legendary PGA golfer Calvin Peete to why they decided to attend Delaware State:
DSUHornets.com: Your father (Calvin Peete) was a successful professional golfer. Is it safe to say he is responsible for your love of golf?
Aisha: Absolutely. He was the one who taught us the game completely. He is solely responsible for my love of golf.
Aleya: I think he's responsible, along with my mother. She was really influential with teaching my sister and I how to play. She got us to really appreciate and love the game.
DSUHornets.com: Your father's glory days on the PGA tour were before you guys were born. Was his career something you guys talked about a lot?
Aisha: He did. Often times I'd wish I was born back in that time so I could see him throughout his career. He would talk about it often, especially when teaching us how to play and how to think on the golf course.
Aleya: We did. I was really surprised because when you're younger you don't even realize how famous and everything that he was. He always told us stories, my mom would tell us stories. People would come up to us and be like, “Oh, I watched your father all the time.” So it's nice hearing stories.
DSUHornets.com: Besides your sister and father, do any of your other family member's golf?
Aisha: My mother actually plays golf as well, along with my grandfather on my mother's side. So we would have family golf outings every holiday.
Aleya: Yes. My older sister plays golf, my mother, my father and my grandfather.
DSUHornets.com: How old were you guys when you first started golfing?
Aisha: I first started golfing around the age of six, so basically when I was old enough to really understand the game.
Aleya: I probably started golfing when I was around five, a little after when my sister started.
DSUHornets.com: Did both of you pick up on it quickly, or did one of you have the upper hand?
Aisha: I think both of us picked up on it pretty quickly. We're actually in a lot of other things as well, but golf was definitely something we took too really quickly.
Aleya: No, we both played and practiced together at the same time, and we both enjoy it about the same.
DSUHornets.com: Do you guys ever get really competitive with each other or is it usually more about having a good time?
Aisha: For me personally, I just like to go out and have fun with my sister. There is a little competition to strive to continue to get better, but there's nothing that will separate us or anything.
Aleya: It's usually a good time. We have a little bit of competition, but it's nothing too serious.
DSUHornets.com: You were both born and raised in Florida, so what brought you to Delaware? Was it mainly DSU?
Aisha: Delaware State, yes. I wanted to play golf in college and Delaware State offered me the best opportunity to play and continue with my studies as well.
Aleya: My sister. She asked me to come to the school, so I thought that was really special.
DSUHornets.com: What are some of the biggest differences from living in Florida compared to living in Delaware?
Aisha: It's honestly not too different, besides the no tax on shopping or anything. The biggest difference I would have to say is the weather. I am not acclimated, even after four years, to this weather.
Aleya: Probably has a lot to do with the weather. Being in Florida, we don't really have winter, so coming here and actually having all four seasons has been the biggest change.
DSUHornets.com: Aisha, you are currently a senior, so what are your plans after graduating?
Aisha: I do have an internship now, so I plan on working for the company that I'm interning with, and/or going to graduate school.
DSUHornets.com: Aleya, do you think you're going to be alright with you sister graduating this year?
Aleya: I hope so. We'll have to see when we get there. But I think I'll be okay.
