(Brooklyn, N.Y.) – The Delaware State women's soccer team (6-9-1) saw its program-best four-game winning streak come to a screeching halt Sunday afternoon with a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss thanks to an unassisted Ashley Drozd (2) goal of the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds (4-9) during the 100th minute.
With this loss, the Hornets also dropped to 0-3 all-time against LIU Brooklyn, while Blackbirds snapped a five-game losing skid.
For the second straight contest, DSU struck early in the first half, this time with forward Bri Musco connecting during the fifth minute for her team-leading third goal of the season. Later in the period, LIU Brooklyn answered with leading scorer Marian Awad (5) finding the back of the net during the 34th minute. Awad would go on to finish with a game-high five shot attempts.
The second stanza, meanwhile, featured Delaware State totaling six shots with midfielders Elise Pratt and Danielle Valente registering one attempt each placed on-goal. Nevertheless, each shot resulted in Erin Harbison (2-3) saves. LIU Brooklyn, on the other hand, totaled 10 shots, headlined by Madison Gomez's attempt during the 76th minute nearly going in if not for hitting the crossbar.
Unfortunately for the Hornets, despite firing three shots, Awad's goal was LIU Brooklyn's lone attempt during the overtime period.
At game's end, the Blackbirds totaled 20 shots, compared to DSU's 12. In the net, sophomore Michele Lammers (6-9-1) collected eight saves in the losing effort, whereas Harbison finished with three saves after sitting out the first half.
Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will head south to face VMI this Thursday at 4 p.m.
