(Dover, Del.) – Fresh off a season-long seven-game road swing, the Delaware State women's basketball team (1-11, 0-1 MEAC) returned home for the first time since Nov. 24 only to fall 64-56 to the Morgan State Bears (4-11, 1-2 MEAC), in what was the Lady Hornets' first MEAC test of the season.
With this loss, DSU dropped its eighth in a row, while the Lady Bears picked up their first conference victory of the season.
In the first half, the Lady Hornets led by as many as 11, yet took a 29-22 advantage into the locker room, behind forward Amber Bogard's 11 points (5-of-7) to lead all scorers at the break. Defensively, DSU limited Morgan State to just 19 percent (6-of-31) shooting, including leading scorer Tracy Carrington (19.3 ppg), who returned for the first time in seven games, to six points (1-of-8).
The second stanza, meanwhile, took a turn for Delaware State, after guard Jade Washington converted down low to give her squad a 50-43 with 7:56 left in regulation. Taking advantage of starters Washington, Bogard and guard Mikah Aldridge all picking up four fouls at critical moments down the stretch, the Bears outscored the Lady Hornets 21-6 the rest of the way, including a 15-0 run over a five-minute span.
At the charity stripe, the Bears went 18-for-22 (.818) in the second half, headlined by Carrington going 8-for-9 (.888) and guard Danielle Robinson going a perfect 6-for-6. For the game, despite being held to 29 percent (17-of-58) from the floor as a unit, Carrington finished with a game-high 24 points (6-of-18) and went 12-for-13 (.923) from the free throw line. Freshman guard Braennan Farrar, meanwhile, poured in 14 points (3-of-12) as the only other Bear to score in double figures.
Delaware State, on the other hand, featured Bogard matching a career-high in points with a team-high 21 on 9-for-14 (.642) shooting, whereas fellow frontcourt mate Tierra Hawkins tallied her team-leading fourth double-double of the season with 13 points (6-of-7) and 11 rebounds.
Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will continue conference action this Monday evening (5 p.m.) at Howard. Last season, the two squads split the season series with both teams winning at home.
