(Dover, Del.) – In its first home match of the season, the Delaware State women's soccer team (0-3) took a first period lead by way of a Paige Wilcox (1) breakaway score, but the UMass Lowell River Hawks (2-1) answered with two second half goals, capped off by Taylor Chianese's (1) game-winning strike in the second overtime to give her squad the 2-1 win.
For Wilcox, her goal occurred during the 31st minute, when she collected a steal around the midfield line, followed by a plethora of nice moves before netting her first score of 2014.
The second period, meanwhile, UMass Lowell were on the attack right out of the gates, placing two shots on-frame resulting in saves for DSU's Katelyn Koslosky. Continuing their pace, the River Hawks tied the game during the 51st minute with midfielder Sarah Raye (1) connecting for an unassisted goal.
For the rest of regulation, neither squad failed to breakthrough, as was the story for the first overtime.
Unfortunately for the Hornets with just under two minutes to play, Chianese came away with a steal deep in DSU territory, resulting in the game-winner just out of Koslosky's reach.
At game's end, the River Hawks finished with 19 shots, including 14 in the second half. In the case of Delaware State, it totaled nine attempts, as Koslosky tallied a game-high seven saves.
Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will welcome Fairleigh Dickinson to Alumni Stadium this Sunday at 1 p.m.
