INJURY-RIDDLED HORNETS FALL BIG ON THE ROAD TO COPPIN STATE, 81-54

(Baltimore, Md.) – Playing without its two top leading scorers in forward Tierra Hawkins (shoulder), who missed her third straight game, and guard Raven Bankston (ankle), who was named MEAC Player of the Week earlier in the day, the injury-plagued Delaware State women's basketball team (6-14, 1-7 MEAC) were no match for the Coppin State Eagles (10-11, 7-2 MEAC) Monday evening with the Hornets falling, 81-54.

With this loss, CSU prevented DSU's first three-game winning streak of the season, whereas the Eagles won their fourth contest in the last five games.

In the first half, with the Eagles leading by one, DSU's Deanna Harmon, who was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, picked up her second foul at the 16:06 mark and was forced to go to the bench.  As a result, the Eagles went a 7-0 run, capped off by a Kyra Coleman jumper, which forced a Delaware State timeout with 14:13 left in the opening half.

Later in the period, the Hornets battled back to make it a 22-15 ball game after Harmon scored on a fast break, which forced a Coppin State 30-second timeout with just under nine minutes to play before halftime.

Nevertheless, but the Eagles answered with a 10-2 run at the 6:26 mark and managed to take a 38-25 lead into the locker room.

At the half, Harmon led all scorers with 16 points (6-of-7), whereas Coleman tallied eight points to lead the way for the Eagles.  Defensively, Coppin State forced 13 DSU turnovers and scored nine points off those miscues.

To open the second period, CSU scored six unanswered points within the first three minutes take its largest lead of the game at 44-25, forcing another Delaware State 30-second timeout.

The Lady Hornets managed to cut the deficit back to 16 (57-41) after guard N'Kayah Kersey found guard Diamond Williams for a three with 10:31 left in the game.

However, the Eagles answered yet again, this time with a 14-0 run headlined by back-to-back threes from the corner by guard Ashle Craig to take their largest lead of the game, 73-41, at the 5:56 mark.

The rest of the way, the Lady Hornets never got within 20 as Coppin State held on to complete the season sweep.

When the final buzzer sounded, Harmon was held to just two points in the second stanza to finish with a team-high 18 points (6-of-9), whereas Williams poured in a career-high 15 points (5-of-15) off the bench.  Guard Jade Washington also scored in double figures with 10 (4-of-6), while the Lady Hornets as a unit shot 39 percent (20-of-51) from the floor, committed 22 turnovers and were out-rebounded, 44-35.

In the case of Coppin State, it shot 47 percent (34-of-73) from the floor with four players scoring in double figures, led by forward Janelle Lane's 19 points (9-of-18).  As a team, the Eagles scored 36 points in the paint and 25 points off the bench, spearheaded by Jordan Swails' 16 points (8-of-10).

Next up for the Columbia Blue & Red will be a back-to-back home slate, beginning with South Carolina State this Saturday (2 p.m.), followed by Savannah State next Monday (5:30 p.m.).
