NO. 4 TOWSON TOO MUCH FOR DSU

Towson, Md. (Sep. 14, 2013) --- Towson University lived up to its No. 4 national ranking with a 49-7 victory over Delaware State in the Tigers' home opener before 10, 302  fans at Johnny Unitas Stadium this evening.

The Tigers scored the first 49 points of the game en route to its third victory in three games this season.  The Hornets fell to 0-2.

Towson racked up 408 yards of total offense, 209 by the pass and 199 rushing.

All-America candidate Terrence West rushed for 82 yards and a school-record tying five touchdowns on 16 carries in the contest. West has scoring runs of 1, 3, 1 and 2 yards in the first half; and a 17-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Towson quarterback Peter Athens completed 16-of-24 passes for 209 yards and a touchdown.

For the second straight week, Delaware State tallied more passing yards than the opponent but failed to muster much of a running game.

Hornet quarterback Corey Murphy connected on 26-of-53 passes for 234 yards and a touchdown. Murphy has 536 yards passing in the first two games this season.

DSU netted just 15 yards on the ground. The Hornets had 42 positive rushing yards, but lost 17, including 16 on five Towson sacks.

Hornet receiver Milton Williams surpassed the 100-yard mark for the second straight game. Williams led all players with nine catches for 105 yards and the Hornets' lone touchdown on a six-yard pass from Murphy with 4:27 left in the third quarter. He has 19 catches for 217 yards in the Hornets' two games.

Delaware State was plagued by four turnovers, two interceptions and two lost fumbles.

Towson scored 28 points off the Hornet turnovers. The Tigers led 7-0 after the first quarter before adding 28 points in the second to hold a 35-0 lead at intermission.

DSU also surrendered a special teams touchdown for the second straight week. Towson's Derrick Joseph returned the second half kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to give the Tigers a 42-0 lead.     

Defensive back Joe Boyd led the Hornets with 10 tackles, including five solo stops. Free safety Davon Moore had nine tackles (eight unassisted), a forced fumble and a pass break-up.

The schedule doesn't get an easier for DSU. The Hornets will take on No. 1 North Dakota State, the defending FCS champion, next Saturday (Sep. 21). Game time is 3:30 p.m. ET in Fargo, N.D.

Delaware State will not play its 2013 home opener until Oct. 5 against Bethune-Cookman. Game time is 2:00 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
