Dover, Del. (Feb. 4, 2013) --- Delaware State's bid for a six-game win streak was spoiled by red-hot North Carolina A&T in a MEAC women's basketball contest this evening. The Aggies shot 55.1% from the field in a 75-53 victory over the Lady Hornets in Memorial Hall.
DSU lost for the first time since Jan. 6 to fall 8-11 overall and 5-2 in the MEAC. The Aggies improved to 14-7 and 6-2.
Amber Calvin led NCA&T with 19 points, hitting 7-of-11 shots from the field, including two three-pointers. Eboni Ross had 15 points, nine rebounds and six blocks, while JaQuayla Berry added 13 points for the Aggies.
Tierra Hawkins came off the bench to lead Delaware State with 19 points. Hawkins, who 8-for-12 from the field, has hit 26-of-39 shots in the last three games (.667). Tasia Bristow added 15 points for DSU, highlighted by three three-pont field goals.
The Lady Hornets got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 16-8 lead in the first six minutes. Bristow had six points on two three-pointers during the early spurt.
North Carolina A&T answered with a 13-4 run, and took its first lead, 21-20, on a three-pointer by Jessica Lyons with 8:15 left in the first half.
The Aggies scored 15 of the last 16 points in the half to grab a 36-22 lead at the break.
NCA&T led by as many as 27 points in the second half.
The Aggies were 27-for-49 from the field, including 7-of-16 from three-point territory.
Delaware State hit 26 of its 51 shots from the floor, including three three-pointers (3-6).
DSU's five-game win streak was its longest since the 2007-08 season; and 5-1 MEAC start its best since that year.
The Lady Hornets begin a two-game road swing at Norfolk State on Saturday (Feb. 9). Game time is 4:00 p.m.
