(Dover, Del.) – Despite attempting a season-high 10 shots, including three placed on-frame, the Delaware State women's soccer team (0-10) came up short Friday evening to a familiar face in the NJIT Highlanders (4-8), 3-0.
In the first period, no score, the Highlanders got on the board during the 22nd minute when keeper Samantha Bersett (1) placed a goal-kick near the midline as forward Megan Dellavalle (2) gained control. After breaking away from a pack of Hornet defenders, Dellavalle beat a charging Katelyn Koslosky (0-10) for the goal.
About six minutes later, with the ball deep in DSU territory, NJIT increased its lead when defender Jenny Cislo (1) gained possession in front of the net after a shot by defender Jamee Simone (2). Surrounded by a crowd of DSU defenders, Cislo was able to knock it in for the score.
At the half, NJIT maintained its lead, while also outshooting the Hornets, 7-5. In the net, both keepers recorded two saves.
After intermission, same score, the Highlanders extended their lead during the 50th minute when defender Julia Keebaugh (1) made a pass off a throw-in to forward Rebecca Tustin (2) deep in the Hornets' zone. With no defender in sight, Tustin placed her shot out of the reach of Koslosky to give NJIT a commanding 3-0 lead.
Despite facing a large deficit, the Hornets fought all the way to the end by challenging NJIT's defense and Bessert (4-8). Nevertheless, the Hornets were not able to breakthrough as the Highlanders came out on top with the victory.
At game's end, midfielder Chelsea Boursiquot finished with a team-high four shots, while Koslosky came away with a game-high six saves.
In the case of NJIT, it finished with 16 attempts, including nine placed on-goal. As for Bersett, she tallied three stops.
Next up for the Hornets will home matchup against the Cornell Big Red this Sunday at 1 p.m.
