LADY PIRATES FRUSTRATE DEL STATE, 72-33

DOVER, Del. - The Delaware State University women's basketball team recorded season-lows in five categories as Hampton University routed the Lady Hornets, 72-33, Monday evening at Memorial Hall.

Del State tallied a season-low eight field goals on the night en route to a 23.5 shooting percentage on 8-for-34 on the floor.  Their previous season-low came with 10 field goals made at No. 5/6 Maryland on Dec. 8.  The 34 field goals attempted is also a season-low.  DSU's previous low was 44 shots attempted at East Carolina on Nov. 26.

For just the second time this season, the Lady Hornets went without a 3-point basket as they were 0-for-5 from behind the arc.  DSU also went without a trey in a 60-32 loss at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Dec. 3.  The five 3-point field goals attempted was also a season low, with their previous low of seven coming twice (vs. Robert Morris and NJIT).

For the first time in over 10 seasons, the Lady Hornets went without a single steal in a game.  Since the 2001-02 season, no Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference team recorded less than one steal in a game.

Additionally, the Lady Pirates committed a DSU opponent season-low of just five turnovers.  The Terps previously held this number with 10 turnovers.

Despite their team scoring woes, redshirt freshman Tierra Hawkins (Clinton, Md.) collected 17 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the floor and 7-for-7 from the free throw line.  Hawkins scored 13 of her 17 points in the second half.  The forward has scored in double figures in 18 of 22 contests this season.

Freshman Keyanna Tate (Beltsville, Md.) posted a game-high nine rebounds for the Lady Hornets.

Scoring was hard to come by for both teams early out of the gates as the first points were scored almost four minutes into the game with a layup from Hampton's Alyssa Bennett.  The Lady Pirates quickly took advantage of the scoring situation and held DSU with just one field goal (from junior Kianna D'Oliveira (Newport News, Va.)) through the first 11-plus minutes of the game.

Del State's next field goals of the game came back-to-back from sophomore Deanna Harmon (Owings Mills, Md.) at the 8:41 mark and Tate at 7:52 to bring the score to 16-6 in favor of HU.

The Lady Pirates would go up by as much as 17 at 29-12 before two free throws from sophomore Tasia Bristow (Baltimore, Md.) gave DSU just a 15-point halftime deficit at 29-14.

The scoring difficulties continued for the Lady Hornets in the second half as Hampton outscored DSU, 43-19, to wrap up the game.

The Lady Pirates had five players in double figures and were led by Keiara Avant's game- and career-high 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting.  Senior Jericka Jenkins collected a double double for Hampton with 10 points and 10 assists.

The loss is Delaware State's seventh straight at home as they fall to 4-18 on the year and 1-8 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.  MEAC defending champion Hampton improves to 17-4 overall and 9-1 in the conference, good for second place behind Florida A&M.

The Lady Hornets now hit the road as they travel to Baltimore, Md. next Saturday to face Coppin State at 2 p.m. and Morgan State at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
