HAWKINS LEADS DSU TO 67-53 WIN OVER MORGAN STATE

BALTIMORE, Md. - Redshirt freshman Tierra Hawkins (Clinton, Md.) posted a career night with 25 points and 15 rebounds as she led the Delaware State University women's basketball team to their second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory of the season with a 67-53 win over Morgan State Monday evening at MSU's Hill Field House.

Hawkins went 10-for-22 from the field and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe en route to her 20th double figure contest.  She collected 11 points and seven rebounds in the first half against the Lady Bears.

Hawkins' previous career-high of 22 points came early on in the season in the team's victory over Wesley on Nov. 15.  Additionally, the forward previously tallied 13 rebounds in a DSU win at North Carolina Central on Jan. 28.  Hawkins also tied a career-best three steals.

The win halted a four-game losing skid for the Lady Hornets as they improve to 5-19 overall and 2-9 in MEAC play.

Morgan State (6-19, 3-9 MEAC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Hawkins single-handedly gave the Lady Hornets a 5-4 lead with a jumper and traditional three-point play within the first four minutes.

The Lady Bears would go up by three at 8-5 at 15:22 when Delaware State rattled off seven straight points to take a 12-8 lead. The Lady Hornets held the lead for almost the remainder of the half when a three from Keirah Hicks gave Morgan State the 29-27 advantage with just over two minutes left in the half.  Del State finished the half on a 5-0 run for a halftime lead of 32-29.

With 15:42 left in the game, MSU's Omara Parker scored five consecutive points to give the Lady Bears what would be their final lead of the game at 40-39.  Parker rattled off Morgan's next 10 points and finished the game with a team-high 19 points.

The Lady Hornets responded immediately with a seven point run to go up, 46-40, with just over 11 minutes left on the clock.

MSU would cut things to four at 55-51 with just under five minutes remaining before Hawkins sparked another DSU 7-0 run to give the Lady Hornets a 62-11 lead with just over two minutes left.  Parker's jumper at 2:06 would be Morgan State's last points of the contest.

Freshman Chelsea Dukes (Baltimore, Md.) finished the game for Delaware State with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting and four 3-pointers.  Dukes also tallied a career-high four steals to lead the Lady Hornets.  Sophomore Tasia Bristow (Baltimore, Md.) collected 12 points, going 8-for-9 from the free throw line in addition to five assists.

Delaware State continues their four game road trip with a 4 p.m. contest at Norfolk State next Saturday and a 6 p.m. tip at Hampton on Monday.
