DOVER, Del. - The Delaware State
University women's basketball team held a lead with less than eight minutes
remaining, but Towson University converted DSU turnovers and fouls into baskets
to take a 23-11 run to wrap up the game and win, 70-59, Thursday evening at
Memorial Hall.
The Lady Hornets took control of the opening
tipoff for just the third time this season and immediately put points on the
board as sophomore Tasia Bristow
(Baltimore, Md.) put up a fast-break layup to go up 2-0. From the on, the Tigers led almost the
entirety of the first half and went up by as much as 13 points at 19-6 with a
layup from Krystal Parnell at the 11:35 mark.
DSU slowly chipped away at the deficit and
tied the game at 25-25 with a free throw from sophomore Deanna Harmon (Owings Mills, Md.) with 32-seconds remaining. Parnell sank a free throw of her own with
nine seconds on the clock to give Towson a 26-25 halftime lead.
Head coach Ed Davis must have lit a fire
under the Lady Hornets during halftime as Del State returned to the court with
more defensive intensity. Just prior to
the under-16 media timeout, Lady Hornet freshman Keyanna Tate (Beltsville, Md.) sparked an 11-2 run with a layup to
give DSU their largest lead of the game at 43-33 with just over 12 minutes
remaining in the game.
The Tigers responded almost immediately with
their own surge of points as they went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 43-40 with
11:03 on the clock. Towson continued to
cut the DSU lead and tied things at 47-47 with 7:58 remaining. A free throw from freshman Coreenah Redden (Wilmington, Del.) gave
the Lady Hornets their last lead of the game at 48-47 just eight seconds later.
A Krystin Fields free throw at 6:13 gave the
Tigers a 51-50 lead and they would never look back, going up by as much as 11
points twice in the final minutes before their 70-59 victory.
Bristow led Del State (3-10) in scoring for
the fourth straight game with 16 points.
She also added in a game-high three assists and team-high three
steals. Freshman Tierra Hawkins (Clinton, Md.) recorded 14 points on the night in
addition to six rebounds. Junior Kianna D'Oliveira (Newport News, Va.)
also grabbed six rebounds for the Lady Hornets.
Parnell posted a game-high 22 points for
Towson (9-2), with 11 free throws. Nyree Williams collected a game-high 10
rebounds in the Tiger win.
DSU takes a few days off for the holidays
before traveling south to Austin, Texas to take on the No. 22/25 Longhorns on
Dec. 28 at 4 p.m. (ET).
