DOVER, Del. - A career-high in
points for sophomore Tasia Bristow
(Baltimore, Md.) and a 28-4 run to close out the game in addition to forcing 26
turnovers proved to be the right combination to snap a seven-game losing streak
for the Delaware State University women's basketball team as they came back to
defeat St. Francis College (N.Y.), 73-66, Sunday afternoon at Memorial Hall.
Bristow
posted a game-high 28 points, including 10 free throws, to break her previous
career-high of 25 points, set at St. Francis on Dec. 22, 2010. The guard also tied a career-high with four
3-pointers.
"For
Tasia to stay focused as she did was my number one concern," remarked DSU head
coach Ed Davis. "She didn't rush, she stayed focused and her
teammates fed off of this. She hit some
big shots and I'd like to see Tasia lead scorers every night, but to get that
shooting rhythm down will take some time.
I hope this is an indication of what is to come."
Down,
62-45, with 7:37 remaining in the game, two free throws from junior Kianna D'Oliveira (Newport News, Va.) sparked
a 28-4 run for the Lady Hornets. Del
State allowed just one field goal during that period; a 3-pointer from Ozana
Marginean as time expired.
During
the final minutes of the game, the Terriers committed six fouls and 10
turnovers to allow DSU to come from behind for the victory. They recorded 26 total turnovers in the game,
resulting in 28 points for the Lady Hornets.
"In
my coaching career, I've never seen a team come back with as much intensity
that our kids showed in the final minutes off of the bench, because it wasn't
just starters on the front line when we started the run," Davis commented. "I'm thoroughly impressed with their
initiative to fight through the 17 points and stay focused. The whole turn of the game came with the
insertion of [freshman] Coreenah Redden. She only scored two points, but the fact that
she created a lot of pressure on their point guards created a lot of problems
in the second half with the press. Once
we denied their point guard [Jasmin Robinson] the ball, their offense just shut
down. The whole key of the run started
with Coreenah, she really ignited the rest of the team."
Bristow
added, "Coreenah really sparked us defensively.
We had to work hard to get it, but once we all focused defensively, the
points just came."
St.
Francis led by as many as 20 in the game, coming with 14:25 left in the game
off of a layup by Colette Hounshell.
The
Lady Hornets, previously averaging 20.4 turnovers a game, turned the ball over
against the Terriers just nine times.
Redshirt
freshman Tierra Hawkins (Clinton,
Md.), DSU's leading scorer, and freshman Keyanna
Tate (Beltsville, Md.) each tallied 11 points in the win. Sophomore Deanna Harmon (Owings Mills, Md.) collected a team-high six
rebounds.
Jaymee
Veney led SFC with a career-high 19 points and 10 rebounds on 6-of-9 shooting
from the field and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. They also saw double figure scoring from
Jasmin Robinson (15 points) and Stefanie Bingham (10 points).
With
the win, Del State improves to 3-7 on the year and 3-1 at Memorial Hall. The loss is St. Francis' fifth straight as
they move to 1-8 on the season.
"This
win gives us our confidence back," Bristow stated. "We know we can win going into a game and
this definitely helps."
The
Lady Hornets return to the court next weekend as they travel to the Sunshine
State for the University of North Florida Osprey Holiday Classic. Del State takes on UNF on Saturday at 3:30
p.m. and FIU on Sunday at 1 p.m.
