DSU STRUGGLES IN 65-49 LOSS TO NJIT

DOVER, Del. - In a game plagued by turnovers and fouls, the Delaware State University women's basketball team shot just 28.6 percent en route to a 65-49 loss to NJIT at Memorial Hall Wednesday evening.

Redshirt freshman Tierra Hawkins (Clinton, Md.) led the Lady Hornets, for the fourth straight game, with 20 points.  Sophomore Tasia Bristow (Baltimore, Md.) was the sole other DSU player in double figures with 19 points, 17 of those coming in the second half.  Hawkins also led the team with eight rebounds.

NJIT was led by Uju Nwankwo's 14 points and also received 13 from Rayven Johnson.  The Highlander bench outscored the Lady Hornets' bench, 24-4, and as a team shot 41.7 percent compared to DSU's 28.6 percent.

Del State held a 33-31 advantage in the second half, but an 18-point deficit in the first half was too much for the Lady Hornets to overcome.

Points didn't come easy for either team in the first half as the score was tied, 6-6, at the 10-minute mark.  A jumper from NJIT's Melanie Griffin at the 8:10 mark sparked a 15-2 run from the Highlanders to take a 23-10 lead.  The Lady Hornets were held without a field goal during this time as their sole points came from two Bristow free throws.

The final six points of the half came from Hawkins, including four free throws.  The Highlanders led the Lady Hornets, 34-16, at halftime.  The two teams combined for 23 fouls and 34 turnovers at the break.

With 11:15 remaining in the game, Bristow drained a three from the left side to bring Del State within 14 points at 48-34.

A jumper in the paint from Kimberly Dweck with 3:00 remaining gave the Highlanders a 20-point lead at 59-39.

A layup from freshman Coreenah Redden (Wilmington, Del.) brought the Lady Hornets within 14 at 61-47 with 1:14 remaining, but there just wasn't enough time left for Del State to make a comeback.

The Lady Hornets drop to 2-2 on the season while the Highlanders improve to 3-1.

Delaware State hits the road for the 10th Annual East Carolina Thanksgiving Tournament this weekend.  The Lady Hornets take on host ECU at 4 p.m. on Saturday and meet up with Robert Morris on Sunday at 2 p.m.
