Dover, Del. (Mar. 4, 2010) --- A six-minute second half scoring drought was Delaware State's undoing in a 58-55 MEAC women's basketball loss to Maryland-Eastern Shore in the regular season finale for both teams in Memorial Hall Thursday evening.
The Lady Hornets close out the regular season with a 6-23 overall record and a 4-12 mark in the MEAC. UMES improved to 11-15 and 8-8.
Delaware State trailed 27-24 at the half, but opened up a 48-36 lead on a lay up by Sade Bowen with 11:50 left to play.
The Lady Hornets did not score again until a running jumper by Selena Galloway to tie the score at 48-48 with 5:33 left to play. Delaware State missed each of its five shots from the field and committed six turnovers during the drought.
Maryland-Eastern Shore puled ahead for good, 50-48, on a lay up Chena Parker with 5:18 remaining in the game. The Hawks opened up a 57-50 lead on two free throws by Parker with 1:13 left.
Amber Cook and April McBride led UMES with 14 points each, while Parker added 10.
Galoway led the Lady Hornets with a game-high 18.
Delaware State will be the No. 10 seed in next week's MEAC Tournament in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Lady Hornets will play the No. 7 seed in a first round game on Mar. 9.
