Wilmington, N.C. (February 28, 2009) ? DSU pitchers' Megan Lambertz and Brittney Ruark only gave up two runs but the Hornets were no-hit in route to their second straight loss against Liberty. With the loss, the Hornets fall to 4-2 on the season.
Liberty scored their first run in the second inning on a Beth Bennett homerun. They would take a 2-0 lead in the third on a single by Danielle Howard. That was all the Flames would need as hurler Tiffani Smith threw a no-hitter to give the Hornets just their second loss of the season.
The last time Delaware State was held hitless was on May 16, 2008, in the NCAA Tournament against Houston.
The only base runners for DSU came on three walks.
Lambertz allowed the two Liberty runs in 3.2 innings while striking out one batter. Ruark threw 1.2 innings in relief and struck out three batters.
Next up, the Hornets will travel to Norfolk Virginia for the Norfolk Invitational on Saturday-Sunday, March 7-8. There they will face off against host Norfolk State, Binghamton, and Colgate all on Saturday. Game times are set for 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively. DSU will then play in either the championship game or consolation game depending on the outcomes of their games.
