LADY HORNETS OUTLAST BEARS, 59-56

Baltimore, Md. (Feb. 28, 2009) --- Freshman Sonia Johnson led four players in double-figures with a game-high 17 points in Delaware State's 59-56 women's basketball win over Morgan State at Hill Field House this afternoon.

 

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Lady Hornets, who improved to 15-13 overall and 11-4 in the MEAC. The Bears fell to 17-11 and 9-6.

 

DSU also won its seventh straight in the series.

 

The victory also enabled the Lady Hornets to maintain their tight hold on second place in the MEAC standings.

 

Johnson was 5-for-12 from the field and 7-of-7 at the free throw line. Jameka Smith had 13 points, while Keyhana Wakefield tallied 11 and Cortney Crockett 10 for the Lady Hornets.

 

Corin Adams and Kristina Rosario led Morgan State with nine points each.

 

Morgan State hit 13-of-26 first half shots (50%), and led 32-28 at the break.

 

Delaware State scored the first five points of the second half, and pulled ahead 33-32 on a three-point play by Wakefield with 17:59 left to play.

 

The biggest lead by either team was three points over the next over the next 15 minutes, which also featured four ties.

 

Morgan State forced the final tie of the game, 51-51, when Tire ion Turner hit two free  throws with 2:45 remaining.

 

The Lady Hornets answered with a 6-0 run, and opened up a 57-51 lead on two free throws by Crockett with 1:05 on the second half clock.

 

Delaware State opened up its biggest lead of the game, 59-52, after two free throws by Johnson with 49 ticks remaining.

 

The Lady Hornets missed six free throws in the final 30 seconds to give Morgan State a shot. The Bears took advantage by scoring four straight points, and pulled to within three (59-56) on a lay up by Airies with 14 seconds left.

 

Morgan State had a final shot after DSU's Jameka Smith missed two free throws with 4.4 seconds remaining, however, Adams missed a desperation three-point attempt from 35-feet at the final buzzer.

 

Delaware State outscored the Bears 31-24 in the second half.

 

“We made things interesting in the final minute, but I'm really pleased with the way we battled throughout the game,” said Delaware State head coach Ed Davis. “We needed a strong effort after our tough Florida trip, but we received solid contributions from a number of players to get back on track.”

 

The Lady Hornets will close out the regular season with a visit to Maryland-Eastern Shore on Thursday (Mar. 5). Game time is 5:30 in Princess Anne, Md.
