Wilmington, N.C. (February 28, 2009) ? The Hornets extended their winning streak to four games with a 4-3 win in eight innings over UNC-Wilmington but fell later in the evening to Liberty, 6-2 at Boseman Field on the campus of UNC-Wilmington. DSU is now 4-1 on the season.
Against the Seahawks, the Hornets fell behind 3-0 after three innings. They cut the lead to two runs in the fourth inning when Allison Rubin drew a walk scoring JoJo Shields. The RBI was Rubin's second of the season.
DSU tied the game at three in the sixth inning when Courtney Taylor singled to bring home two runs. The RBI were Taylor's first and second of the season.
The game went to extra innings where Delaware State struck first in the seventh scoring the go-ahead run only to see it reciprocated in the bottom half of the inning by UNC-Wilmington.
In the eighth inning, Taylor drove in her third and most important run of the game for the Hornets when she singled with two outs.
Pitcher Brittney Ruark closed out the game in the bottom half, preserving the victory. Ruark pitched the entire eight innings, allowing four earned runs.
Liberty struck first in the second game scoring on a single in the second inning to take the early 1-0 lead. They tacked on three more in the fourth and two more in the sixth to stop the Hornets' four-game winning streak to start the 2009 season.
Senior Megan Lambertz led DSU offensively going two-for-four with an RBI. She continues to lead the team with a .500 batting average.
The Hornets are scheduled to play these two teams again on Saturday, but times are TBA due to weather.
