Jersey City, N.J. (Jan. 2, 2009) --- The Delaware State women's basketball team shot just 26.4% from the floor in a 49-40 loss to St. Peter's at the Yanitelli Center Friday evening.
The Lady Hornets lost for the fourth time in the last five games to fall to 3-9 on the season. The win snapped a six-game losing streak for St. Peter's, which improved to 3-8.
Delaware State hit just 14-of-53 shots from the floor, including 1-for-10 from three-point territory. The Lady Hornets were 8-for-26 in the first half (30.8%) and 6-of-27 after the break (22.2%).
St. Peter's never trailed in the contest. The Peahens scored the first five points of the game, and led 24-14 after a free throw by Alena Ali with 3:33 left in the first half. Delaware State scored six of the last eight points of the half, and pulled to within 26-20 on a lay-up by Cortney Crockett with two seconds left before intermission.
The Lady Hornets missed their first seven shots of the second half, but only trailed 29-23 when Selena Galloway hit a three-pointer with 13:59 left to play.
Delaware State missed five of six shots from the floor and committed six turnovers during the next eight minutes. St. Peter's opened up a 39-29 lead on a lay-in by Tania Kennedy with 5:59 remaining in the game.
The Peahens opened up their biggest lead, 46-33, on a basket with 1:17 left to play.
St. Peter's enjoyed a big edge on the boards, outrebounding DSU 46-27. The Lady Hornets managed to stay close for much of the game by forcing mistakes by the Peahens. St. Peter's committed 32 turnovers, the most by a Delaware State opponent this season.
Galloway was the only DSU player in double-figures with 11 points. Sonia Johnson had eight points and a team-high four rebounds for the Lady Hornets.
Delaware State will return to action on Tuesday (Jan. 6) at home against Maryland-Eastern Shore in the 2008-09 MEAC opener for the Lady Hornets. Game time is 6:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
