Greensboro, N.C. (Jan. 19, 2009) ?- The Delaware State women's basketball team blew a 15-point second-half lead en route to a 56-51 loss to first-place North Carolina A&T in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest at the Corbett Sports Center Monday evening.
The Aggies won their fifth straight to improved to 11-5 overall and 5-0 in the MEAC. The loss snapped a four-game win streak for the Lady Hornets, who fell to 7-11 and 3-1.
Delaware State led 32-24 at the half, and opened up a 45-30 lead on a free throw by Cortney Crockett with 11:42 left to play. Crockett came off the bench to lead the Lady Hornets with a career-high 15 points.
The Aggies answered with a 14-2 run, and pulled to within 47-44 on a free throw by Jaleesa Sams with 6:32 left to play. Delaware State was 1-for-3 from the field, and committed five turnovers during the North Carolina A&T rally.
The Lady Hornets led 51-46 before the Aggies made their final push.
Brittanee Taylor-James sank a three-pointer to cut DSU's lead to 51-49. After a North Carolina A&T free throw made it 51-50, Shantar Waddell hit a lay-up off an offensive rebound to give the Aggies a 52-51 lead with 1:50 remaining in the game.
After an offensive foul on the Lady Hornets, the Aggies stretched their lead to 54-51 on a lay-up by Sams with 1:25 left.
Delaware State failed to cut into the Aggies' when Ashley Thompson missed a short jumper and Keyhana Wakefield came up empty on a three-point shot in the final minute. North Carolina A&T's Ta'Wuana Cook sealed the win for the Aggies with two free throws in the final seconds.
The Lady Hornets were outscored 32-19 in the second half. Delaware State was 8-for-25 from the field, including 0-for-4 from three-point territory, in the final 20 minutes.
Sonia Johnson added 12 points and Wakefield 11 for DSU. Wakefield also led all players with eight rebounds. Taylor-James, the MEAC's leading scorer, led the Aggies with a game-high 16 points. Sams added 10 points for NCA&T.
Delaware State will begin a four-game homestand against Bethune-Cookman on Saturday (Jan. 24). Game time is 2:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
