LADY HORNETS DEFEAT UMES TO CLINCH THIRD PLACE IN MEAC

Dover, DE ---  Senior Ashlee Burbage, playing in her final home game, scored a game high 16 points to lead Delaware State to a 57-46 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore in MEAC women's basketball Thursday. The Lady Hornets won their fourth straight to finish the regular season with a 17-13 overall record and a 12-4 mark in the MEAC. The win also secured third place in the final league standings for DSU. UMES ends the regular season at 17-12 overall and 10-6 in the MEAC. Burbage tied her season high with four three-point field goals (4-for-8) and was 4-for-4 at the free throw line. Fellow senior Raquel Collier added 15 points, while Keyhana Wakefield came off the bench to tally 10 for the Lady Hornets. Senior Katreem Palmer led all players with 11 rebounds, while Thea Littlepage had 10 boards for DSU. Casey Morton was high scorer for UMES with 12 points, while April McBride added 10. Tiffany Reid led the Hawks with eight rebounds. Delaware State led 27-20 at the half, and opened up a 33-22 lead on a jumper by Wakefield with 16:04 left to play. UMES scored 15 of the next 21 points, and pulled to within 39-37 on a three pointer by Morton with 8:58 remaining. Delaware State led 42-40 before taking control for good. The Lady Hornets ran off nine straight points, and pulled ahead 53-40 when Collier hit two free throws with 1:04 left to play. UMES missed each of its four shots from the field and committed four turnovers during the Delaware State rally. The Lady Hornets return to action next Thursday in the quarterfinals of the MEAC Tournament in Raleigh, NC.
