Norfolk, VA --- Ashlee Burbage led four players in double figures with 17 points in Delaware State's 81-55 win over Norfolk State at Echols Hall Saturday. The Lady Hornets won their third straight to improve to 13-12 overall and 8-3 in the MEAC. Norfolk State has dropped its last three to fall to 4-17 and 1-10.
Keyhana Wakefield and Selena Galloway scored 12 points each, while Raquel Collier added 11 for DSU.
Delaware State's point total was its highest since an 87-65 win over Howard during the 2005-06 season.
The Lady Hornets were 29-for-51 from the field (56.9%), exceeding the 50% mark for the first time this season. DSU was three-for-four from three-point territory.
The Lady Hornets scored 19 of the last 23 points in the first half to take a 42-22 lead at the break. Burbage came off the bench to score all 12 of her first half points during the rally. She was five-for-six from the field in the opening stanza. Collier added eight first half points for the Lady Hornets. DSU was 17-for-28 from the field (60.7%) in the first half.
Norfolk State outscored DSU 15-4 to start the second half, and pulled to within 46-37 after a basket by Tashawna Higgins with 14:50 left to play.
The Lady Hornets answered with a 7-0 run, and pulled ahead 53-37 on a three-point play by Galloway with less than a minute later.
Norfolk State could get no closer than 14 the rest of the way.
DSU held its biggest lead, 81-54, after a free throw by Wakefield with 2:08 left.
Delaware State played without second leading scorer Katreem Palmer (10.7 ppg), who was held out due to a knee injury.
The Lady Hornets return to action on Monday at first place North Carolina A&T. The 4:00 p.m. contest will be televised live on ESPNU.
