Dover (Dec. 13, 2008) --- Sophomore Cortney Crockett came off the bench to lead all players with a career-high 14 points and Keyhana Wakefield added 12 to help lift Delaware State to a 46-35 women's basketball win over Fairleigh Dickinson in Memorial Hall Saturday afternoon.
The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Lady Hornets, who improved to 2-5 on the season. The Knights lost for the fifth time in six games to fall to 2-6.
Mariyah Laury was high scorer for Fairleigh Dickinson with 12 points, while teammate Alyssa Mayrose led all players with 12 rebounds.
Crockett, whose previous high at DSU was four points, hit 7-of-10 shots from the field. She scored 10 of Delaware State's 29 second-half points. The Lady Hornets outscored Fairleigh Dickinson 29-18 in the final 20 minutes.
“We really needed an offense spark, and Cortney came through in a big way,” said Delaware State head coach Ed Davis. “She has worked hard in practice, and appears to a be lot more comfortable in our rotation.”
The score was 19-19 early in the second half before Delaware State began to pull away.
Wakefield capped off a 10-2 run with a three-pointer to give the Lady Hornets a 29-21 lead with 12:44 left to play.
Delaware State used a 10-0 second-half run to take control for good. Crockett began the rally with a lay-up, and Wakefield ended the run with two free throws to give DSU a 46-31 lead with 2:35 remaining.
The first six minutes of the contest belonged to Fairleigh Dickinson. The Knights scored the first 11 points of the game, capped off by a Kayla Killian basket with 14:07 left in the first half.
Delaware State didn't score its first points until Wakefield hit a three-pointer with 14:00 minutes remaining in the half. The basket keyed an 11-0 DSU run to even the score. The Lady Hornets tied (11-11) on a jumper by Crockett with 8:01 to go before halftime.
The score was 17-17 at the break.
The Lady Hornets were 19-for-64 from the field (29.7%), including 3-of-9 from three-point territory. Delaware State struggled at the free throw line, hitting just 5-of-15 from the stripe.
Fairleigh Dickinson was 14 of 44 from the field (31.8%), including 2-of-6 from beyond the arc. The Knights were 5-for-9 at the free throw line.
The 36 points by Fairleigh Dickinson are a season-low for a Delaware State opponent this season.
The Lady Hornets hit the road for the next five games, beginning with a stop at Ohio State on Tuesday (Dec. 16). Delaware State will also visit Michigan State (Dec. 16), Georgia State (Dec. 21), Northeastern (Dec. 28) and St. Peter's (Jan. 2) before returning home to face Maryland-Eastern Shore in the MEAC opener on Jan 6.
“Today's win was big for us because we have some very tough opponents coming up,” said Davis. “Our goal is to improve each game in preparation for the MEAC season.”
