College Park, Md. (Nov. 16, 2008) --- Nationally-ranked Maryland had four double-figure scorers in a 73-46 win over Delaware State in
women's basketball at the Comcast Center Sunday. Marah Strickland led the Terps (1-1) with 14 points, while Marissa Coleman and Lynetta Kizer tallied 13 each. Maryland's Demauria Liles added 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Lady Hornets (1-1) were led by Keyhana Wakefield's game-high 15 points. Wakefield was 5-for-10 from the field and perfect on four free throws. Freshman Sonia Johnson came off the bench to add eight points, while Alexis Abraham had six points on two three-point field goals.
Maryland, ranked No. 3 nationally in the preseason Associated Press Poll and No. 5 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, had scoring runs of nine and eight points to open up a 17-5 lead midway through the first half.
The Terps stretched their lead to 29-9 on two free throws by Coleman with 5:02 left in the first half.
Maryland led 37-17 at the break, and opened up a 60-30 lead on a three-pointer by Strickland with 9:48 left to play.
Delaware State was 15-for-48 from the field (31.3%), while Maryland 21-for-52 (40.9%). The Terps had a big advantage at the free throw line, hitting 29-of-39 at the stripe. The Lady Hornets shot just 17 free throws, hitting 11.
Maryland also dominated the boards, outrebounding DSU 49-to-21.
The Lady Hornets return to action on Wednesday (Nov. 19) at home against Kent State. Tip-off is 7:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
