Dover (Nov. 14, 2008) --- Selena Galloway led four players in double figures with a career-high 18 points in Delaware State's 80-50 women's basketball win over Cheyney in the season opener for the Lady Hornets in Memorial Hall Friday evening.
Galloway was 4-for-8 from the field, including 2-of-3 from three-point territory. She was also 8-for-12 at the free throw line. Reserves Alexis Abraham, Denyse Moore and Candice Stewart added 10 points each for the Lady Hornets. Stewart was perfect on four shots from the field and two at the free throw line, while Moore was 5-for-8 from the floor.
Stephanie Orji, who played at Delaware State during the 2006-07 season, was high scorer for Cheyney with 12 points.
Delaware State scored the first 10 points of the game, and opened up a 26-8 lead on a jumper by Abraham with 6:43 left in the first half. The Lady Hornets opened up their biggest first-half lead, 41-13, after Keyhana Wakefield hit two free throws with 2:39 left in the half.
The Lady Hornets led 41-15 at the break. Galloway led all players with 15 first-half points, while Abraham had seven.
Cheyney showed some spark to start the second half, cutting Delaware State's lead by more than half. The Lady Wolves scored 16 of the first 17 points in the second half, and pulled to within 42-31 on a lay-up by Orji with 12:46 left to play.
The Lady Hornets answered with an 11-2 run over the next four minutes, and stretched their lead to 53-33 on a jumper by Galloway with 8:53 remaining. Stewart scored four points and Galloway three during the run.
Cheyney could get no closer than 18 points the rest of the way.
Moore capped off an 8-2 Delaware State run with a lay-up to give the Lady Hornets their biggest lead, 80-47, with 31 seconds left to play.
The Lady Hornets had just two more field goals than Cheyney (23-21), but held a big advantage in three-point field goals (6-0) and free throws (29-8).
Thea Littlepage led DSU with eight rebounds, while freshman Sonia Johnson came off the bench to grab seven.
Delaware State returns to action on Sunday (Nov. 16) at Associated Press preseason No. 3 Maryland. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
