Dover, DE --- Keyhana Wakefield led three players in double figures with 14 points in Delaware State's 63-42 women's basketball win over Norfolk State in Memorial Hall Saturday. The Lady Hornets won their fourth in a row to improve to 7-9 overall and 2-0 in the MEAC. Norfolk State has lost four straight, and 10 of the last 11, to fall to 2-11 overall and 0-4 in the MEAC. Katreem Palmer had 14 points, while Ashlee Burbage added 11 for the Lady Hornets. Burbage started the game in place of Raquel Collier, who was held out to rest a sore knee. Collier, Delaware State's leading scorer this season at 12.6 points per game, is expected to return to action in DSU's next game. Ebony Gibbs and Areya Walker led Norfolk State with 10 points each. Delaware State scored the first six points of the game, and opened up a 20-4 lead on two free throws by Selena Galloway with 8:43 left in the first half. The Lady Hornets led 34-17 at the break. Delaware State was ahead 38-17 before the Spartans came to life. Back-to-back three-pointers by Gibbs and Natasha Huntley keyed a 17-4 Norfolk State run during a seven minute span of the second half. The Spartans pulled to within 42-34 on a lay up by Walker with 12:25 left to play. Delaware State answered with a 9-0 run, and opened up a 51-34 lead on a lay up by Jameka Smith with 9:19 remaining. Burbage scored five points during the rally. Norfolk State could get no closer than 14 the rest of the way. The Lady Hornets forced the Spartans into 36 turnovers, the high for a DSU opponent this season. Delaware State also recorded a season-high 19 steals, including seven by Smith. Sade Bowen came off the bench to lead the Lady Hornets with a game-high nine rebounds. Delaware State wraps up a two-game home stand against North Carolina A&T on Monday (Jan. 21) in a battle of MEAC unbeaten teams. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
