Orangeburg, SC --- Ed Davis became the all-time leader in women's basketball wins at Delaware State after a 50-34 victory over South Carolina State in the MEAC opener for both teams at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Center on Saturday. The Lady Hornets won their second straight to improve to 5-9 overall, while the Bulldogs lost their fourth in a row to fall to 3-10. Davis is now 128-95 at DSU, passing Mary “Honey” Lamb-Bowman for first place on the school's career list for women's basketball wins. Lamb-Bowman was 127-138 in 10 years with the Lady Hornets (1985-95). Delaware State overcame a nearly 12-minute first half scoring drought and a seven-point second half deficit in their first MEAC contest since capturing the league title last March. The Lady Hornets trailed 29-25 before embarking on a 16-0 second half run to take control of the game. Sade Bowen capped off the spurt with a lay up to give Delaware State a 41-29 lead with 5:37 left to play. Ashlee Burbage scored eight points during the decisive rally, including two three-point field goals. South Carolina State could get no closer than nine the rest of the way. The Lady Hornets led 10-4 before a nearly 12-minute dry spell in the first half. During the DSU drought, South Carolina State scored 13 straight points to take a 17-10 lead. The Lady Hornets scored the last four points of the first half to pull to within 17-14 at the break. Delaware State won the second half 36-17. Katreem Palmer led the Lady Hornets with 12 points. She also tied for the team lead with 10 rebounds. Burbage came off the bench to add 10 points. Thea Littlepage had 10 rebounds and tied her school record with six blocked shots. The Lady Hornets forced South Carolina State into 32 turnovers, including 18 on Delaware State steals. Davis has 299 wins as a collegiate head coach. He will go for career win #300 when the Lady Hornets visit Winston-Salem State on Monday (Jan. 14).
NOTES- Davis improved to 86-41 in MEAC regular season games ... Palmer has a team-high three "double-doubles" this season and nine for her career.
