Tallahassee, FL --- Vashon Winton passed for 179 yards and
two touchdowns to lead Delaware State to a 20-7 win Florida A&M in the
Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener for each team before 14,327 fans
at Bragg Stadium. The Hornets improved to 2-0 overall, while Florida A&M
fell to 0-2. Delaware State has won three in a row over Florida A&M for the
first time in the history of the series, which began in 1977. The Hornets have
also opened a season with back-to-back wins for the third straight year. Winton
completed 17-of-25 passes, including touchdown strikes to Shaheer McBride in
the second quarter and William Griggs in the third quarter. After a scoreless
first quarter, Delaware State used a big play on special teams to jump out in
front. Two plays after Alimayo Wilder blocked a punt by Florida A&M's
Wesley Taylor, Winton and McBride connected on an 11-yard touchdown pass to
give the Hornets a 7-0 lead with 10:00 left in the second quarter. McBride had
five catches for 57 yards in the contest. He is now tied with Albert Horsey
(1997-00) for the school record with 160 career receptions. Last week, McBride
passed Horsey for the all-time DSU lead in receiving yards. Florida A&M
took advantage of a Delaware State turnover to tie the game. Four plays after a
Curtis Holcomb interception gave Florida A&M the ball at the Delaware State
40, Albert Chester connected with Taj Jenkines on a five-yard touchdown pass to
make it 7-7 with 1:17 in the second quarter. On the ensuing possession,
Delaware State drove 57 yards on nine plays, resulting in a 34-yard field goal
by Peter Gaertner with one second left in the half to take a 10-7 lead at the
break. A Florida A&M penalty on the
second half kickoff gave Delaware State the ball at the Rattler 49 yard line.
Five plays later, Winton found William Griggs in the endzone for a 19-yard
touchdown to give the Hornets a 17-7 lead with 12:29 left in the third quarter.
It was just the second catch and first career touchdown for Griggs. Gaertner
kicked a 36-yard field goal with 6:26 left in the third quarter to close out
the scoring. Delaware State's defense
held Florida A&M to 272 total yards, including 100 on 31 rushing attempts.
Defensive backs Akeem Green and Andre Kennard led the Hornets with eight
tackles each. Kennard also had his first career interception. Delaware State
returns to action next Saturday (Sep. 15) at Kent State of the Football Bowl
Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) Mid-American Conference.
