DOVER, Delaware --Delaware State put together an 11-play, 80-yard scoring drive, culminating in a 16-yard rushing touchdown from with 1:54 left in the ballgame to give the Hornets a 41-34 win over Stony Brook on Thursday night at Alumni Stadium.
The victory improved Delaware State's record to 1-0 on the season while the Seawolves fell to 0-1.
Ui Ale led Delaware State's passing attack with 259 yards through the air, tossing one touchdown without throwing an interception. The signal caller also added 82 yards and one touchdown on the ground.
To go along with Ale's performance, Sean Weston Jr paced the Hornets rushing attack by accumulating 70 yards and one touchdown over the course of the game, averaging 4.7 yards per carry. Samari Collier chipped in with 70 yards and one touchdown as well, averaging 11.7 yards per carry.
Jaylin Terzado reeled in six catches for 149 yards and one score.
Malcolm Jefferies showed out for the Delaware State defense, recording one recovered fumble. Ryan Pellum Taylor had five tackles in the win.
The Hornets won the turnover battle in Thursday's game, forcing one turnover while avoiding any giveways, with Delaware State turning that takeaway into seven points. Delaware State also had an outstanding day offensively, totaling 518 total yards, 259 on the ground and 259 through the air, while averaging 7.4 yards per play and out-gaining Stony Brook. The Delaware State offense did a good job keeping drives alive, converting on 52.9 percent of third-down attempts.
Defensively, Delaware State held up fairly well against the Stony Brook rushing attack, holding the Seawolves to 172 yards on the ground.
Delaware State's offense took advantage of its trips to the red zone, scoring on three of its three trips, with all of those scores being touchdowns.
How It Happened
DSU found itself down early 6-0, but fired back to take a 7-6 lead with 9:21 left in the first quarter.The Hornets then followed with another score to expand the lead to 10-6.
Delaware State continued to extend its lead, scoring again with 13:21 left in the second quarter to go ahead 17-6.The Hornets continued to extend their lead, scoring again to go up 24-6.
Delaware State continued to build its advantage after Stony Brook made it a 24-13 game, scoring again with 10:15 left in the third quarter make the score 31-13.The Seawolves then rallied, tallying seven points before the Hornets responded with a field goal to extend their lead to 34-20.
The Seawolves came back to tie the game at 34, but Delaware State responded, scoring on a 16-yard touchdown run from with 1:54 remaining in the fourth quarter to take a 41-34 lead. Neither team scored again in the game.
