Hornets secure 5-set win against Quinnipiac

DOVER, DE --The Delaware State volleyball team showed impressive resilience in a 3-2 victory against the Quinnipiac Bobcats Saturday at home at Memorial Hall.

The non-conference win improved the Hornets' overall record to 6-0 on the season.

The Hornets were led by a double-double from Aaliyah Mitchell, who registered 18 kills and 11 digs on the day. Amanda Santos Juliao also added 13 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Courtney Nix chipped in for with 19 digs to go with nine blocks from Hannah Sanders.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Hornets dropped a close first set, losing 26-24 in a game that was tied three times and had one lead change.

SET 2 | Delaware State tied the match at 1-1 following a 27-25 set-two win. The Hornets came out on top of a tight second set, winning in a stanza that was tied eight times and had three lead changes. Delaware State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Quinnipiac attacks in the stanza.

SET 3 | Delaware State dropped the third set, putting the Hornets in a 2-1 hole. The Hornets lost the first point and never took the lead before falling in the set 25-21.

SET 4 | Delaware State then responded to secure set four 26-24 to force a fifth set. The Hornets persevered in a back-and-forth set to win in a stanza that featured four lead changes and was tied 12 times. Neither team was able to grab a lead larger than three points along the way. Delaware State also supplemented their offense with three aces in the set. Delaware State got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked five Quinnipiac attacks in the stanza.

SET 5 | Down two sets to one, Delaware State fired back to win sets four and five, culminating in a 15-7 fifth-set victory, to take the match 3-2. The Hornets grabbed control of the set-five lead at 3-2 and never looked back. Delaware State ended strong, opening its biggest lead of the stanza, eight points, to close out the set. got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked five Quinnipiac attacks in the stanza.
