DOVER, Delaware -- Delaware State used a huge 224-yard output on the ground and three rushing touchdowns to pick up a 21-6 win against Bowie State Saturday afternoon at home at Alumni Stadium.
The triumph improved Delaware State's record to 2-1 on the season while the Bulldogs fell to 0-2.
Shaun Boykins Jr. led all Hornets rushers with 87 yards and two touchdowns in the contest, picking up 8.7 yards per carry. also added 56 yards on the ground, averaging 8 yards per carry.
reeled in two catches for 54 yards.
Wayne Favors III led the Delaware State defensive effort, collecting one interception. Quoy Rainey added four tackles, 1.0 TFL, and one recovered fumble and Malcolm Jefferies had eight tackles, 2.0 TFL, one sack, and one forced fumble in the win.
The Hornets won the turnover battle in Saturday's game, forcing two turnovers while coughing the ball up one time. Delaware State had a big outing on the ground, logging 224 rushing yards while averaging 7.2 yards per carry and out-rushing Bowie State by 97 yards. The Delaware State offense did a good job keeping drives alive, converting on 50 percent of third-down attempts.
Delaware State's defense held up against Bowie State's offense, giving up 287 total yards.
How It Happened
Delaware State got on the scoreboard first with 9:58 left in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead.Bowie State then narrowed the gap to 7-6, but the Hornets responded with a touchdown to make their lead 14-6.
Delaware State kept Bowie State off the scoreboard and increased its lead to 21-6 with 1:53 left in the third quarter. Both teams played the rest of the game without scoring.
