Frostburg, MD — The Delaware State women's wrestling team secured a top-five finish in a massive 28-team field at the Bobcat Open, led by individual titles from
Icart Galumette and
Louise Juitt. The Hornets' fifth-place team performance comes at a pivotal moment as the program prepares for the upcoming NCAA Regional Championship in Georgia.
Icart Galumette (117 lbs) dominated her bracket to capture her second college open championship of the season. Galumette was flawless, recording a 23-second pin followed by three straight 10-0 technical falls, including a shutout in the finals against Frostburg State's Morgan Layman.
Freshman
Louise Juitt (145 lbs) made program history as the first Delaware State freshman to win a college open tournament. After receiving an opening-round bye, Juitt powered through the bracket with a technical fall and a first-period pin before grinding out an 8-2 decision in the championship match.
The Hornets saw four additional podium finishes to bolster their team score.
Christina Lisboa took 4th place at 207 pounds, while
Haylie Briscoe (160 lbs) and Jehieli Velez Almodovar (180 lbs) both earned 6th place.
Chanelle Alburg rounded out the scoring with a 7th-place finish at 131 pounds, punctuated by a 12-0 technical fall in her final bout.
"We are peaking at just the right time as we head into post season," noted the coaching staff. The Hornets now turn their attention to the NCAA Regional Championship in Franklin Springs, GA, where they will field 10 entries in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA National Championship.
