BALTIMORE, MD --The Delaware State men's basketball team could not keep up in a 65-47 loss to the Coppin State Eagles on the road Saturday.
Ponce James led the Hornets (6-16, 1-6) with 11 points and three steals. Miles Webb tacked on four points and Rahmir Moore helped out with seven points and six rebounds.
Led by Bessanty Saragba's four offensive rebounds, Delaware State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in eight second chance points.
Delaware State forced 17 Coppin State turnovers. The Hornets turned those takeaways into 12 points on the other end of the floor. James' three steals led the way for Delaware State.
How It Happened
Delaware State started out the scoring by going on a 9-0 run, culminating in a bucket from James, to take an early lead with 16:04 left in the first half. The Hornets then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 26-23.
Coppin State kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 28-23 advantage before Delaware State went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Corey Perkins' jumper, to seize a 29-28 lead with 18:18 to go in the contest. Coppin State re-asserted control, outscoring the Hornets 37-18 the rest of the way to hand Delaware State the 65-47 loss. Delaware State got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for six of its 24 total points.
