Hornets come Up Short to Coppin State 60-59

DOVER, DE --The Delaware State women's basketball team held Coppin State to just 15.8 percent from deep in a 3-for-19 shooting performance, but fell 60-59 to the Eagles at home Saturday.

The Hornets (3-13, 0-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Amya Scott, who had 16 points, four assists and two steals. Nykesha Sanders added 11 points and two steals and Jermesha Frierson chipped in as well with 11 points.

The Delaware State offense made hay from deep, making eight threes on 17 attempts. Sanders hit three treys for the Hornets in the contest.

Delaware State's defense held Coppin State to only 15.8 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 28.8 percent from the field.

 

How It Happened

Delaware State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 16-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Delaware State then cut the Eagles lead to 23-17 before going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a three from Frierson, to tie the game at 23. The Hornets then broke the tie and seized a 31-27 halftime lead. Delaware State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four three-point shots to account for 12 of its 24 points.

Coppin State then took a 43-38 lead following intermission before Delaware State went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Sanders, to tie things up at 43 with 59 seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Delaware State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled four of the team's 12 third-quarter points.

Coppin State then snagged a 58-54 advantage before Delaware State responded by going on a 5-0 run to seize a 59-58 lead with 1:33 to go in the contest. Coppin State re-asserted control, outscoring the Hornets 2-0 the rest of the way to hand Delaware State the 60-59 loss. Delaware State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring seven of its 16 total points.
