Hornets Rush for 278 yards in 36-14 victory over Bowie State

DOVER, Delaware -- Delaware State used a huge 278-yard performance on the ground, including 100 yards from James Jones, and two rushing touchdowns to pick up a 36-14 win against Bowie State Saturday afternoon at home at Alumni Stadium.

The win improved Delaware State's record to 2-1 on the season while the Bulldogs fell to 1-1.

Kaiden Bennett led Delaware State's passing attack with 179 yards through the air, tossing two touchdowns without throwing an interception. The signal caller also added 36 yards and one touchdown on the ground.

Jones led all Hornets rushers with 100 yards in the contest, picking up 12.5 yards per carry. NyGhee Lolley also added 58 yards and one touchdown on the ground, averaging 58 yards per carry.

Phillippe Wesley reeled in six catches for 71 yards and one score.

Jadarrius Perkins led the Delaware State defensive effort, collecting three tackles, 1.0 TFL, and one recovered fumble. added four tackles, 1.0 TFL, and one sack and Team had in the win.

The Hornets won the turnover battle in Saturday's game, forcing one turnover while avoiding any giveways. Delaware State recorded a powerful performance on the ground, gaining 278 rushing yards while averaging 6.8 yards per carry and out-rushing Bowie State by 72 yards.

Defensively, Delaware State held up fairly well against the Bowie State passing attack, holding the Bulldogs to 176 yards through the air. In part because of that stellar defense, Delaware State receivers out-gained their Bowie State counterparts 181-174.

How It Happened

Delaware State scored on the game's first drive to take a 7-0 lead.The Hornets then extended their lead to 14-0 with another score.

Bowie State then scored to make it a 14-7 game, but Delaware State responded with 2:30 left in the first quarter to increase its lead to 21-7.The Hornets continued to increase their lead, scoring again to go ahead 28-7.

Delaware State continued to increase its lead, scoring again with 10:50 left in the third quarter to go up 36-7. Delaware State didn't score again and Bowie State added seven more points to finish off the game.
