DOVER, Del. - Delaware State women's lacrosse was unable to get past the Wagner College Seahawks on Wednesday afternoon, as the visitors won 19-9.
The Hornets are 1-11 for the season. They are 0-6 in conference play.
BY THE NUMBERS
- London Downing led the team with four goals.
- Kehnai Parks caused a team-high three defensive turnovers, and she scooped up two ground balls.
- Mondy started in goal and made 11 saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST WAGNER
- The Hornets opened the scoring for the afternoon on a Downing free-position shot. The Seahawks responded with three straight goals, even with defensive stops from Mondy and Ceanna McGirt. A Taylor Weston caused turnover would eventually result in a Hannah McMasters free-position score. It was 3-2 after the first quarter.
- Both sides scored a combined four times in the first 2:20 of the second set of 15 minutes. Zahra Gotz cashed in on a McMasters dime before Wagner ripped off three consecutive goals. The Hornets saw a 2-0 run in the middle of the quarter. Downing saw her second score, while McGirt got past the goalie on a man-up situation. Although both teams caused turnovers defensively, the visitors increased their lead to 10-5 going into the locker room.
- Wagner and Delaware State exchanged goals early on in the third. Nailah Green scored unassisted. Mondy stood strong in goal with multiple saves, even with two Wagner scores. McGirt put one in the net with under two minutes. The score was 13-7 at the end of three.
- Parks caused a defensive turnover as the fourth quarter began. Despite Downing continuing to generate offense, the Seahawks would pull away throughout the quarter. Downing scored both Hornets goals to wrap up the evening. Wagner won 19-9.
