Women’s Lacrosse Scores Double Digits in Loss to CCSU Blue Devils

Zahra Gotz Starred

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Even though Delaware State women's lacrosse scored 10 goals on Saturday against the Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils, their second-highest total of the season, it was not enough as they lost 20-10.

The Hornets are 1-10 for the season. They are 0-5 in conference play.

BY THE NUMBERS HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST CENTRAL CONNECTICUT STATE
  • Both sides turned the ball over early, but CCSU would cash in on five straight scores. Downing started Delaware State's day with a free-position goal. Despite multiple Mondy saves, it was 8-1 Blue Devils after one.
  • The Hornets matched the Blue Devils' offense in the second and third quarters. Gotz and Genesys Spann broke through the CCSU defense within about 15 seconds of one another. Kristin Sims scored on a man-up goal, courtesy of an assist from Downing, who got her own man-up score later in the quarter. The Hornets ended the half with a successful clear. CCSU led 12-5 going into the locker room.
  • McMasters collected both of her goals in the third quarter. One was on a man-up situation, while the other was assisted by Gotz. The Hornets' defense played well, not allowing any home team scores until the last three minutes. Delaware State caused three defensive turnovers. Madden Alexander was responsible for two of them. The Blue Devils scored twice more to extend their advantage to 14-7.
  • A Gotz goal at 12:26 remaining snapped a 2-0 CCSU fourth-quarter run. Although London Stewart and Lamyra Rodriguez both added to Delaware State's offensive totals, the latter of which was on a Dylan Wilkes dime, the Blue Devils won 20-10.
UP NEXT
The Hornets return to Drass Field on Wednesday, April 9 at 1 p.m. to face the Wagner College Seahawks.
