Hornets Sweep Hawks on Day One of Series Versus UMES

GAME 1 | Delaware State 5, Maryland-Eastern Shore 0

DOVER, DE --Sophomore Kristin White was dealing on Saturday, hurling a one-hit shutout to lead the Delaware State Hornets past the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks 5-0.

White (0-0) went the distance for Delaware State (22-21, ), giving up one hit, walking two and striking out 14.

At the plate, the Hornets were paced by junior Emma Crowe, who went 2-for-3 on the day with two doubles and three RBI. Freshman Bria Sewell compiled a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI. Junior Mianna Lopez Del Haro also helped out for Delaware State, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a double.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hornets took the lead for good in the second, scoring for the first time in the inning. Delaware State got an RBI single from Sewell, scoring freshman Zaelyn Harding from third base.

The Hornets then tacked on runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, with their biggest output coming in the fifth when they scored two times. Those two runs came across on a two-run double off the bat of Crowe that brought home junior Karly Cain and Lopez Del Haro.

DOVER, DE --Junior Emma Crowe collected four hits to help propel the Delaware State Hornets over the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks 9-1 on Saturday.

Freshman Kaylanie Rodriquez (0-0) got the win for Delaware State (23-21, ). The right-hander went five innings, giving up one run on two hits, allowing no walks and striking out four. Freshman Allyson Fonollosa also pitched well, going one shutout inning while allowing two hits, walking none and striking out two.

In addition to her four hits, Crowe had a double and two RBI to lead the Hornets. Freshman Mi'Shon King put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 1-for-1 with a triple and an RBI. Freshman Destiny Mitchell also helped out for Delaware State, putting together three hits in three trips to the plate.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hornets were trailing 1-0 in the second inning when they first put runs on the board. Sophomore Annalisse Santana came across to score the lone run of the inning for Delaware State and get them on the board.

The game remained tied until the very next inning, when the Hornets got going again on offense. Delaware State pushed two runs across on a two-run double off the bat of Crowe that brought home Mitchell and junior Karly Cain, which brought the score to 3-1 in favor of the Hornets.

Delaware State held Maryland-Eastern Shore scoreless before expanding their lead to 6-1 the following inning.

Delaware State held the Hawks scoreless before their offense got in gear the next inning. bringing the Delaware State advantage to 7-1.

The Hornets held Maryland-Eastern Shore without a run before building on their lead to 9-1 the following inning. Delaware State brought home a pair, with one run driven in by Santana's single. The score remained 9-1 for the rest of the game, as the Hornets coasted to the win.
