WASHINGTON, D.C. - Delaware State women's lacrosse lost a nail-biter on Wednesday against the Howard University Bison, falling 9-8 in overtime.
The Hornets are 1-8 for the season. They are 0-3 in conference play.
BY THE NUMBERS
- London Stewart, Zahra Gotz, and Saniya Craft scored two goals each to lead the Hornets.
- Gotz scooped up five ground balls and had two caused turnovers, which tied the team-high.
- Kimaari Mondy played the entire 65 minutes in goal and recorded a season-high 17 saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST HOWARD
- Craft took the opening draw control and immediately scored to start the afternoon. Gotz would follow soon after on a free-position goal. Despite Delaware State being aggressive on offense, the Bison countered with three consecutive scores to lead 3-2 after one.
- Early in the second quarter, a Howard turnover resulted in a successful clear for the Hornets and another Craft goal, this time on a free position. The two sides exchanged goals on either man-up or man-down situations. Gotz and Stewart wrapped up the scoring for the half on assists from London Downing and Ceanna McGirt, respectively. Mondy made a save just before both teams headed to the locker room. It was 6-4 Hornets.
- Both sides kept each other close in the third, as each scored twice. McGirt's first shot in a free-position attempt was saved, but she stayed with it and scored seconds later. Later, Gotz forced a turnover that eventually turned into a Downing score. Delaware State led 8-6 through three.
- Shots were scarce for both sides in the early fourth quarter. Howard tied the game 8-8 with 7:26 left in regulation. Mondy was a force in the net, saving five shots in the fourth set of 15 minutes. However, the Hornets were unable to break the tie. For the first time since Feb. 2023, the Hornets went to overtime.
- Howard won the opening overtime draw control. Both goalies would see a save before Downing forced a crucial turnover defensively. Even with this, the Bison scored the game-winning goal with 90 seconds remaining. The Hornets lost a hard-fought battle 9-8.
