Hornets Sweep Eagles on Day One of Series Versus Coppin

GAME 1 | Delaware State 6, Coppin State 3
 

DOVER, Del. --K. White was mowing people down on Saturday, punching out nine Coppin State hitters over seven innings of work to help lead the Delaware State Hornets over the Eagles 6-3.

In addition to her nine strikeouts, White (6-4) went seven innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits and walking three for Delaware State (11-11, 3-1).
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hornets got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Z. Harding drove in two runs for Delaware State with a single, that scored K. Cain and M. King.

After the Eagles rallied to tie the ballgame at two, the Hornets came back to retake the lead in the third inning. Delaware State scored once on an RBI single off the bat of A. Santana, which brought the score to 3-2 in favor of the Hornets.

Delaware State held Coppin State without a run before building their lead to 6-2 in the sixth inning. The Hornets notched three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-RBI double from C. Martin. Coppin State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Delaware State still held on for the 6-3 win.
 

GAME NOTES

» White struck out nine Eagles hitters.

» The Hornets had control of the rest of the game after jumping ahead of the Eagles 2-0 in the bottom of the second.

DOVER, Del. --R. Stanley was dealing on Saturday, hurling a four-hit shutout to lead the Delaware State Hornets over the Coppin State Eagles 2-0.

Stanley (3-2) went the distance for Delaware State (12-11, 4-1), giving up four hits, walking none and striking out five.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hornets took the lead for good in the first, scoring for the first time in the inning. B. Sewell came across to score the lone run of the inning for Delaware State and get them on the board.

The Hornets then tacked on a run in the fourth inning to complete their scoring in the ballgame.
 

GAME NOTES

» Stanley tossed a four-hit shutout for the Hornets.
» Stanley struck out five Eagles hitters.
» Delaware State's highest scoring inning was the fourth, when it pushed one run across.
» Delaware State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.
» D. Mitchell stole three bases and Sewell swiped two in Saturday's game.
» The Hornets swiped six bases as a team.
