Women’s Lacrosse Unable to Overcome Presbyterian Blue Hose

Downing Scored Two Goals for the Second Consecutive Game

CLINTON, S.C. – Delaware State finished their South Carolina road trip on Sunday, as they were defeated by the Presbyterian College Blue Hose 18-6.

The Hornets are 0-5 for the season. Their first NEC game will be on Saturday, March 15 against Le Moyne.

BY THE NUMBERS HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST PRESBYTERIAN
  • The Blue Hose scored three times before McGirt cashed in on her first goal of the morning. Yeda Couto-Erickson checked in at goalie at 4:27 and immediately made a save. It was 4-1 after one.
  • The Hornets defense stood strong in the early part of the second quarter. Despite five Presbyterian scores overall, the visitors would get two of their own. Nyla Price got past the goalie following a successful clear. A Downing draw control eventually led to another McGirt goal. The Hornets would put one more shot up before the half ended. The score was 9-3.
  • Aniyah Jones subbed in at goalie for the second half. Delaware State's offense was humming with 12 minutes left in the quarter. Downing scored on a Hannah McMasters assist. Then, a Green draw control went right into a Dylan Wilkes goal from Zahra Gotz. However, four more Blue Hose goals increased the home team's lead. The third quarter concluded with a 13-5 deficit.
  • Both sides turned the ball over twice to open the fourth set of 15 minutes. Four of the five scores were from Presbyterian, but Downing scored with about five minutes remaining off a Tia Epps ground ball. Jones made a save as time ran out, leading to a final score of 18-6.
