Hornets Put Up Fight, But Come Up Short to Morgan State 64-49

MEMORIAL HALL, --The Delaware State women's basketball team held Morgan State to just 15.4 percent from 3-point range in a 2-for-13 shooting performance, but fell 64-49 to the Bears at home Monday.

The Hornets (3-17, 0-7) had two players score in double figures, led by Kiarra Mcelrath, who had 12 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Mahogany Cottingham added 10 points off the bench and Ericka Huggins added five points, three steals and two blocks.

Kyra Lawrence pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Delaware State, grabbing 12 boards and turning them into eight second chance points.

Delaware State's defense held Morgan State to only 15.4 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 37 percent from the field.

 

How It Happened

Delaware State started out the scoring by going on a 5-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Brooke Barnes, to take an early lead with 7:05 left in the first quarter. The Hornets then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 17-13.

Delaware State then cut the Bears lead to 20-19 before going on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Lawrence, to take a 24-20 lead. The Bears cut into that lead, but the Hornets still enjoyed a 28-27 advantage heading into halftime. Delaware State dominated in the paint, scoring 10 of its 15 points close to the basket.

Delaware State then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the Bears 42-39 entering the fourth. Delaware State took advantage of seven Morgan State turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of takeaways.

Delaware State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 64-49. Delaware State pulled down three offensive rebounds to score two second chance points out of 10 total in the period
