Hornet's Secure 77-56 Victory Against South Carolina State

Mcelrath Scores 20 Points

MEMORIAL HALL, --Kiarra Mcelrath totaled 20 points to help lead the Delaware State women's basketball team past the South Carolina State Bulldogs 77-56 at home Saturday.

The Hornets (5-19, 1-9) had three players score in double figures, led by Mcelrath, who had 20 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Ericka Huggins tacked on a double-double with 19 points and 15 rebounds and Najah Lane helped out with 15 points and two steals.

Delaware State collected 40 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to South Carolina State's 34, led by Huggins' 15 boards.

Delaware State forced 16 South Carolina State turnovers while committing 11 themselves in Saturday's game. The Hornets turned those takeaways into 19 points on the offensive end of the floor. Mcelrath's three steals led the way for Delaware State.

 

How It Happened

After falling behind 4-2, Delaware State went on a 7-0 run with 7:54 left in the first quarter to take a 9-4 lead. The Hornets then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with an 18-17 advantage. Delaware State capitalized on four South Carolina State turnovers in the period, turning them into six points on the other end of the floor.

Delaware State built that first quarter lead to 27-21 before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 4:28 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Lane, to increase its lead to 35-21. The Hornets proceeded to tack on one point to that lead and enjoyed a 40-25 advantage heading into halftime. Delaware State forced five South Carolina State turnovers in the period and turned them into six points.

After intermission, Delaware State held on to its advantage and owned a 55-42 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Delaware State played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint.

Delaware State kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run to grow the lead to 64-47 with 1:59 to go in the contest. The Hornets kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 77-56 win. Delaware State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring seven of its 22 total points.
