MEMORIAL HALL, --Martaz Robinson scored 28 points and Robert Smith added 23, but the Delaware State men's basketball team fell to the South Carolina State Bulldogs 94-88 at home Saturday.
Robinson and Smith's stellar scoring performances led the Hornets (13-12, 5-5) in the contest. Robinson tacked on three steals and Smith added three steals. Kaseem Watson also helped out with 19 points, four assists and two steals.
The Delaware State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 22 South Carolina State turnovers while committing 20. Those takeaways turned into 25 points on the offensive end of the floor. Robinson's three steals led the way individually for the Hornets.
How It Happened
After falling behind 30-27, Delaware State went on a 7-0 run with 1:39 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Smith, to take a 34-30 lead. The Hornets then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 36-33 advantage. Delaware State capitalized on 11 South Carolina State turnovers in the period, turning them into 11 points on the other end of the floor.
Delaware State kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run to grow the lead to 63-56 with 7:25 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs then fought back to even things up at 74-74 and send the game to overtime. Delaware State took care of business in the paint, recording 20 of its 38 points in the lane.
South Carolina State then took control in overtime and won 94-88.
