MEMORIAL HALL, --Javarzia Belton hit a buzzer-beating shot as time expired to lead the Delaware State men's basketball team past the North Carolina Central Eagles 86-84 at home Monday.
The Hornets (14-12, 6-5) had five players score in double figures, led by Robert Smith, who had 24 points. Belton tacked on 14 points off the bench and Martaz Robinson helped out with 14 points and three steals.
Delaware State grabbed 41 rebounds in Monday's game compared to North Carolina Central's 34, led by seven boards from Kaseem Watson. The Hornets also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 19 rebounds into 25 second chance points.
The Delaware State defense was a problem in Monday's game, forcing 20 North Carolina Central turnovers while committing 17. Those takeaways turned into 30 points on the other end of the floor. Robinson's three steals led the way individually for the Hornets.
How It Happened
After falling behind 35-21, Delaware State went on a 5-0 run with 2:34 left in the first half to narrow its deficit to 35-26. The Hornets deficit remained the same as they entered halftime trailing 41-32.
Delaware State narrowed its deficit to 64-61 before going on a 7-0 run to seize a 68-64 lead with 1:07 to go in the contest. The Eagles then fought back to even things up at 75-75 and send the game to overtime. Delaware State took care of business in the paint, recording 24 of its 43 points in the lane.
Delaware State then took care of business in extra time, outscoring North Carolina Central 11-9 to seize victory by the 86-84 final score.
