NORFOLK, VA --The Delaware State men's basketball team hit 7-of-16 attempts from beyond the arc, shooting 43.8 percent from deep in a 96-84 loss to the Norfolk State Spartans on the road Monday.
The Hornets (13-11, 5-4) had four players score in double figures, led by Kaseem Watson, who had 19 points and six rebounds. Robert Smith tacked on 18 points and three steals and Martaz Robinson helped out with 17 points and four assists.
Delaware State utilized great ball movement in Monday's game, piling up 20 assists on 34 made field goals. Individually, Ponce James dished out the most for the Hornets with five assists.
The Delaware State defense caused its share of mistakes in Monday's game, forcing 15 Norfolk State turnovers while committing 14. Those takeaways turned into 24 points on the offensive end of the floor. Smith's three steals led the way individually for the Hornets.
How It Happened
After falling behind 45-34, Delaware State went on a 5-0 run with 45 seconds left in the first half to narrow its deficit to 45-39, a score that would hold until halftime.
Norfolk State kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 93-79 advantage before Delaware State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Smith's three, to shrink the deficit to 93-84 with 11 seconds to go in the contest. Norfolk State responded and outscored the Hornets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 96-84. Delaware State capitalized on nine Norfolk State turnovers in the period, collecting 14 points off those turnovers.
